Getting started and switching · For businesses evaluating 3CTel
Can I switch phone providers without losing calls?
Yes. The new system is configured and tested on a temporary number while your existing service keeps answering calls. When you are ready, your number is ported on a scheduled date and calls start arriving on the new system. There is no period where the number is unreachable, provided you keep your old service active until the port completes.
How the switch stays invisible to callers
Number porting is a transfer of the number's routing from one carrier to another. Until the port completes, calls continue to reach your old provider. Once it completes, they reach 3CTel. Callers dial the same number throughout and notice nothing.
Because the new system is built in advance, the moment of the switch is only a change in where calls arrive, not a change in how they are handled. Greetings, menus and voicemail are already in place.
What to do in the right order
- Do not cancel your current provider first. A cancelled number may be released and cannot always be recovered.
- Have the new system tested and staff signed in before the port date.
- Choose a port date that avoids your busiest hours where possible.
- Keep the old phones plugged in until you confirm calls are arriving on the new system.
- Cancel the old service only after the port is confirmed complete.
If you are leaving a large carrier
Leaving Bell, Rogers, Telus or a cable provider follows the same process. The port request is submitted to your current provider with the account details from your latest bill. Bundled services deserve attention: if your phone line is bundled with internet, ask the provider in advance what happens to the internet portion when the phone number leaves, so you are not surprised.
Contract terms with your current provider are between you and that provider. 3CTel handles the port; check your existing agreement for any notice period.

Will calls be missed on the day of the port?
Ports are usually completed within a short window on the scheduled date. During that window, calls reach either the old or the new system, both of which are live, so callers are still answered. Staff should be signed in to the new system that morning.
Can I switch only part of my business first?
Yes. Some businesses move one location or one number first and port the rest later. The specialist can plan a staged migration so each number switches on its own date.
What if something goes wrong after the switch?
Your specialist remains your point of contact after the port. Most post-switch questions are about routing preferences rather than faults, and they are adjusted in the admin portal or by the specialist.
