Why does business texting need registration and how long does it take?

Carriers in Canada and the United States require numbers used for business texting to be registered so they can tell legitimate business messages from spam. Registration links your number to your business name, address and the kind of messages you send. Unregistered numbers are filtered or blocked. 3CTel submits the registration for you; approval usually takes days to a few weeks depending on the number type and how complete the information is.

Why registration exists

Text messaging from ordinary local numbers was designed for people, not businesses. As companies started sending reminders and marketing from local numbers, carriers introduced registration so that each business number is tied to a real, identifiable organization and an approved purpose. Messages from registered numbers are delivered normally; messages from unregistered numbers are increasingly filtered or dropped without notice.

The process is often called 10DLC (ten-digit long code) for local numbers. Toll-free numbers use a separate verification process with a similar goal.

What 3CTel needs from you

Your 3CTel specialist collects this during planning or when you add texting to an existing account, and submits it on your behalf. Accurate, consistent details matter: a business name that does not match the registered address is the most common reason for delays.

  • Legal business name, address and, where applicable, business registration number.
  • Website or a public listing that shows the business exists.
  • A short description of what you will text about (for example appointment reminders and customer replies).
  • Sample messages of the type you intend to send.
  • How customers agree to receive texts (for example by texting you first or ticking a box on a form).

How long it takes and what to expect

Timing depends on the number type, the accuracy of the information and the carriers' current review backlog. Local-number registration is often approved within days; toll-free verification can take longer. Until approval, outbound texts may be limited or not delivered, and 3CTel will tell you when your number is fully enabled.

Registration is a general Canadian and US carrier requirement rather than a 3CTel rule. It is described here neutrally; how your business handles consent and message content is your decision.

If you are switching from another provider, an existing registration does not automatically move. Plan for a new registration as part of the port.

Related questions.

Can I text before registration is approved?

Inbound texts usually work as soon as texting is enabled. Outbound messages from an unregistered number may be limited or filtered by carriers, so it is best to treat texting as live only once 3CTel confirms approval.

Does registration cost anything?

Carriers charge registration and campaign fees that vary by number type. Any cost is shown on your quote before activation, and 3CTel does not bill anything before your service is activated.

What happens if my registration is rejected?

Rejections are normally caused by mismatched business details or a vague description of message use. Your specialist reviews the reason, corrects the submission with you and resubmits. Most rejections are resolved on the second attempt.
